William A.  Brennan M.D., FACS

Dr. Brennan hails from the Carolina’s originally and grew up in a family of four. His mother, Babs was a switchboard operator at the American Red Cross. His father , Bill Sr. , was a salesman for Allis-Chalmers Corp. Having one sister, Barbara, Dr. Brennan had his work cut out for him standing out as she would eventually go on to Ivy league law school and finally become one of our country’s special prosecutors for the United States Department of Justice. “My sister and I are very close but it was a real task to be heard over her while she argued her case in front of my parents at the dinner table” reveals Dr. Brennan.

Dr. Brennan’s love of the living sciences led him to a Bachelors degree in Chemistry from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian College in 1979 and then on to Clemson University for a Masters degree in Biochemistry in 1984. “It was at Clemson that I saw medical research first hand and my research involved outlining neurochemical pathways in the brain. Soon my interest turned to medical practice and away from the laboratory” says Dr. Brennan. He would become accepted later that year into medical school at The University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, South Carolina.

As a third year student in medical school, Dr. Brennan was introduced to the world of Neurosurgery. “I’ll never forget the first neurosurgery cases I was invited to scrub on. It was a man in his 40’s who fell off a motorcycle and had a skull fracture” recalls Dr. Brennan. “All I can remember is the feeling that I was somewhere I needed to be, doing what I needed to be doing”. Dr. Brennan was awarded the Surgery Medal from the University at graduation and was inducted into the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. He was accepted into the Neurosurgery training program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where he spent the next seven years mastering the field and preparing for private practice. Since then Dr. Brennan has performed over 3000 surgeries and was made a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
